Every novice yoga student imagines that he or she is well prepared and advanced in his or her practice. When we actually face the problems, we will know our energies, our strengths, and our capacity to tolerate the pairs of opposites.
Many of the difficulties of modern students of yoga are due to the unfavorable circumstances in which we have to live. We have so many difficulties - we cannot find isolation, solitude; an absence of a proper spiritual guide and we have personal weaknesses of body, mind, and senses. Sometimes it is difficult to understand where we are actually, at a particular stage, and it is easy to miscalculate our situation, due to either over-enthusiasm or lack of proper understanding.
Life is very large; it is not confined only to our little room or to our body. There are many fields of life – physical, geographical, social, political, moral, and intellectual – which are interconnected. Our involvements in these fields of life, therefore, have to be properly managed, and their questions must be answered in a satisfactory manner. Also, the needs of the body and the senses are not unnecessary things when they are actually there.
The purification disciplines known as Yama and Niyama in yoga are not ordinary or simple steps that can either be bypassed or be practised with a neglectful attitude. They are scientific requirements and logical stages which are unavoidable in one's life, and we do not escape them merely by calling them ethical or moral.
They are very important stages which contribute to the strengthening of one’s being - the entire personality – and make it fit for the higher practices. The practice of Yama and Niyama is the way in which we become actively conscious of the vulnerable spots in our personality and they can become stumbling blocks when not properly attended to in the further stages of practice.
About this course
In this course, Mani Raman will share scientific and psychological insights into the practice of Yama and Niyama beyond ethics and morality. You will learn how to understand the need of this discipline in our modern life. Adjusting our internal features to align with external factors, how can we transform our total personality and overcome frustrations and failures of the various factors in life? The course will guide you to judiciously observe your inner nature and how to intelligently harness the lower mind to avoid reactions and to further progress in your daily Sadhana.
